My favorite is from Clean Break, and possibly isn't even written by him:

Quote:
Looking for another way
To breathe above the sea of mediocrity

The reason is that I've been stuck on this sentiment for awhile now, and this song is better than say... oh I don't know... The Climb.

I love that line so much that when I was thinking about buying one of the etsy disks, I was going to use part of that. Everyone was getting the lyrics from Straight Ahead and I kept thinking a combo would be great: "Take a minute just to breathe above the sea of mediocrity."

Breathing above the sea of mediocrity is a similar sentiment to A Daily AntheM's "break your neck for some subtance" and "so long to the ordinary day." Love. And, interestingly since I haven't even heard the whole song, I regularly get the phrase "we are historically ordinary, today" from the Cherry Lane snippets stuck in my head. I think I'm kind of stuck on the value of the ordinary vs. the extraordinary and I think at various points Cook has been too.

Another one of my favorites is from Just in Case:
Quote:
So hold me to the light
And watch me fade to white
And burn away.

Those just hit me in the gut every single time. But for pure evocativeness, I still think the Hold lines are amazing:
Quote:
It's strange how sadness presents itself
When there's no one around

Those are off the top of my head. If I started actually reading through lyrics for those ones that have jumped out at me, this post would be much, much longer.

Very interesting. It strikes me as not a coincidence that ADAM was a pre-Idol song. I wonder if songs with this sentiment will not be in the pipeline any more now that his life is, in fact, extraordinary.

I know, I know. Just didn't want to get stuck down that rabbit hole! :)

Quote:
Tossing pennies, making wishes to make it right
Another lonely day, another lonely night,
And I would give anything if you would only pick up the phone

Yes, adore this one too. What I wouldn't give for a full, proper recording of that one.

I've wondered the same thing, but he still talks about this split pretty regularly in interviews. His whole life has changed (become extraordinary), but he hasn't (he's still ordinary). In some ways, it's probably the flip of how he felt before. At least based on his lyrics, I get the sense that he felt like he wanted to be extraordinary (not that he would have ever labeled himself as such), but was trapped in an ordinary life, or at least fearful that he would be trapped in an ordinary life. Now, he clings to his sense that he is an ordinary person who gets to do extraordinary things.

I hope themes like this aren't totally absent from his future lyrics. As much as I adore his love lost lyrics, I want more identity and life's purpose type lyrics, too.

I think my favorite lyric, and I'm not even kidding, might be "you're a broken bride and we all know we can win you over with just a kiss on the neck." Because it just paints such a clear picture for me. And because of how the whole song works out in the end, where it turns out everybody's broken...

I, too, am finding some lyrics I really like in songs I'm not so into. I love the line, "These scars we wear remind us, the more we change, the more we're all the same" from Avalanche.

On the other hand, I think Mr. Sensitive is a brilliant song, and I wouldn't change a note or word in it. And, yet, when I look at the lyrics alone? I can't pick out a particular part that moves me. This puzzles me.

I will jump on the Daily AntheM bandwagon, too. Lyrically, I think that song is amazing. All of it, though; can't pull out two lines.

I'd have to say my favorite lyric is from Holding Court:

Quote:
Like a rope around my neck I'm running circles
Around the thought of you

I've always loved this line in On the Floor maybe not for its complexity but for the tone it sets as the opening line.

Quote:
True friends stab you in the front; you've got my throat

NTC, I have to agree with you about Mr.Sensitive. It is one of my favorites from DCTR and it took a while to grow to that place. There are a lot of great lyrical gems in there. I also love the use of "Ignorance is Bliss", one of my favorite lines ever.

Quote:
This city feels low
Against the gleam and the glow
Of his diligence to their elegance

I'll have to think of more later...

Also, good point Elle about the lyrical themes. I am curious if David will have some different "stories" to tell. When we went thought the snippets that one night I recall we saw David was repeating the Only Honest story quite a bit about being in a relationship that is over but hasn't ended yet. You and I seems to be a new story, so it is intriguing what the album will be made up of.

I'm with those who can't pick just one, but I will scale down my super long list. ;o)

Life on the Moon:
Here are my terms, Have some faith in me
And I'll let you be who you need to be

A Daily AntheM: pretty much the whole damn song, but especially:
Hold on to anything at all
It's a long way down, between the summer and the fall

And agreed with those who say:
    the bridge of Declaration
Just feel anger... from Mr. Sensitive.

Hold:
Oh, but its okay to breathe your worries away
When everything and everyone try to lead you astray
Hold your own, hold your ground, hold to light when you're down
And always believe that there's a way back home

Therapy:
But you can't see this, and you've never been this
    Question everything you are
I come back stronger, can't help but remember
That it's easy when its done being hard

Straight Ahead
So take a minute just to breathe
And think of everything you wanted,
    and what you got instead

Fall Back Into Me
Congratulations you left me a little jaded & rejected
    ....
So now I'm bloodied by my fist, clenched, swinging

Searchlights
    You are for contradictions sake
Everything I remember, that I'd swore I'd forget

Silver love the whole song, but in particular:
When writing your history, I will always be a footnote
A distant memory, a warning sign, of mistakes made
The kind that you learn from
As well as the chorus.

The Finish Line
Perfection's not guaranteed, cause I don't know what I need
Work in progress it seems. This is me

Souvenir
Its not funny but all I can do is laugh

And Yes, that is my short list. LOL While looking at the lyrics to be sure I had them right, I noticed that AC (from The Story Thus Far) has a very similar lyric to Permanent.
AC has
You must understand I'd take your place in a heartbeat
And Permanent has:
And so I ask: Oh God is there some way for me to take his place?

Just something I thought was interesting.

Thanks to many lazy weekends watching far too many silly "10 Best" specials on The Travel Channel, I recognized this instantly:

Absolut Icebar

I love that he's a) playing tourist and b) just the tiniest bit embarrassed about it.

Because having to wear a giant parka to drink glowing vodka cocktails in glasses made out of ice is a little silly. But I would totally go if I were there.

ETA: It's kind of a shame that everyone twitpics nowadays. Because if anything ever called for a Polaroid, this is it. [/ridic "Hey Ya" references]

Wha wha what? I guess Idol realized it needed someone to salvage that damn show this season. Brought in the big guns for some ratings.

Hope Dave and the boys are wearing green!

Now, what will be sung?

MF, my thoughts exactly. They have to bring in DC&TA to salvage a pitiful season.

I'm sort of grumbleeee (is that a word?). Yea, thrilled Dave will be on AI on Wednesday night to save this pathetic season--at least for the week, BUT! dammit, he's DavidfuckingCOOK! a WINNER of this show! It's way too early in the season! These are the pimp spots for folks who came in....3rd. or 7th. Or whatever. Get Constantine Maroulis in there. Not a winner! Yea yea Kris Allen was just on, but dammit, that was different. It was for a cause.

Watching the spike for DCTR will be fun, tho, and can I be greedy and ask for two appearances? Because if I see, say, Kimberly Caldwell singing some auto-tuned crap at the semi-finals, I will throw a brick at my TV.
